When Should I Inflate My Birth Pool? (Returns & Defect Considerations)Updated 21 hours ago
We understand there can be some uncertainty around when to open and inflate your birth pool—especially if you're unsure whether you'll end up using it. Here's what you need to know:
📦 Can I Return an Opened Birth Pool?
No—birth pools must be unopened and in their original packaging to qualify for return. Once opened, pools are considered used due to hygiene and handling concerns and are non-refundable.
If you're unsure whether the pool will be used, we recommend keeping it sealed until you're confident you'll either use it, sell it, or donate it.
🕒 When Should I Inflate It?
Most families choose to inflate their pool between 37–38 weeks gestation. This timing balances two important factors:
- You're close enough to labour to feel confident it will be used
- It's still early enough to detect and resolve a rare manufacturer defect before you go into labour
⚠️ What If There’s a Defect?
Defects are rare (less than 2%), but can happen. Because birth pools are made of vinyl, they're vulnerable to:
- Cold temperatures during unpacking
- Improper storage or handling
- Accidental punctures
If you inflate the pool and notice a defect early, we’ll have time to ship you a replacement. There’s not much we can do if you discover a problem during active labour, so it’s best to test the pool ahead of time.
💬 Should I Wait or Open It Now?
It’s entirely up to you. If you're hesitant, have a chat with your midwife or doula—they may have specific guidance based on your birth plan and setting.
